Biodegradable material manufacturer Here’s the mechanism of action of biodegradable materials.

A manufacturer of biodegradable materials explains that, for polymers prone to hydrolysis, both simple hydrolysis and enzymatic hydrolysis may occur in vivo. Lipases can facilitate the breakdown of polyesters, while hydrolases promote the degradation of easily hydrolyzable polymers. In the presence of these enzymes, the degradation rate of PCL is significantly accelerated. Typically, complete degradation takes 2–3 years; however, in the presence of enzymes, this timeframe is reduced to just a few days. For certain non‑hydrolyzable polymers, an alternative degradation mechanism involves enzymatic oxidation. Immunohistochemical studies have confirmed that the material is taken up and metabolized via endocytosis by phagocytic cells in vivo.

Biodegradable material manufacturer It should be noted that, upon implantation in the body, polymeric biomaterials elicit acute inflammatory responses of varying degrees at the implant site. When tissue is injured, the permeability of surrounding blood vessels increases, and polymorphonuclear leukocytes rapidly migrate to the site of inflammation. Activated neutrophils can promote the differentiation of monocytes into macrophages.

A manufacturer of biodegradable materials explains that polymorphonuclear leukocytes and macrophages metabolize to produce large amounts of superoxide anions (O₂⁻), which are unstable intermediates that are subsequently converted into the more potent oxidant hydrogen peroxide. Both reduced coenzymes (NADPH) and oxidases in the body participate in this conversion, while superoxide dismutase (SOD) plays a role in accelerating the process.

Hydrogen peroxide can induce the auto‑degradation of polymers at the implantation site; meanwhile, under the catalytic action of myeloperoxidase (MPO), it can further be converted into hypochlorite. Hypochlorous acid is also a potent oxidant for biomaterials, capable of oxidizing the amino groups in polyamides, polyureas, and polyurethanes, thereby cleaving the polymer chains and promoting degradation.

Among biodegradable materials, bacteria, molds, fungi, actinomycetes, and other microorganisms play a key role in the degradation process. According to manufacturers of degradable materials, degradation can be classified into three types:

1. The physical effects of living organisms, resulting from the growth of biological cells, lead to mechanical degradation of the material;

2. The biochemical processes of living organisms, as well as the ability of microorganisms to transform substances into new compounds;

3. Under the direct action of enzymes, microorganisms degrade certain components of materials and products, leading to their decomposition or oxidative breakdown.

Properties of Biodegradable Materials

Biodegradable materials have the following characteristics:

1. It can be disposed of with waste or composted, returning to nature;

2. Its volume decreases due to degradation, thereby extending the service life of the landfill.

3. There is no issue of ordinary plastics needing to be incinerated;

4. Reduce the harm caused by littering to wildlife and plants;
